NFA bird Podcast: I am Johnnie Kamugisha. The bird for today is a White-starred Robin
The White-starred Robin is a small Robin of 15-16 cm in length and 18-25 gm with females being slightly smaller than males.
The White-starred Robin also sometimes simply called the Starred Robin is a species is related to Chats but now placed in the old world flycatcher family.
The White-starred Robin is principally found in primary or secondary moist evergreen forest in East and Southern Africa.
It needs forests with good understory of shrubs and vines.
It also occupies forest edges, bamboo or heath zones in high elevation areas.
This is a brightly coloured Robin with a bright yellow breast and belly, a slate or grey coloured head with spots on the eyes and throat and blueish wings.
The White-starred Robin is territorial and seasonal breeder that lays up to three eggs in domed nest built out of dead leaves, rootlets, moss, lined with leaf skeletons and fine plant materials.
White-starred Robins hide their nests very well, usually on earth banks, a rock, against a tree trunk name it.
The exact breeding timing of the White-starred Robin varies across its range and area size from 0.5 to 0.75 ha.
The White-starred Robin calls like a few other birds vary barry geographically.
Both sexes sing the territorial advertising song, which is a quiet song sung from near the ground.
The White-starred Robin also has a courtship song/call which is sung during a display flight.
White-starred Robin feeds mostly on insects and fruit although it may feed on beetles, moths and ants as well.
The incubation lasts between 16 to 18 days after which chicks fledge around 13 to 15 days after hatching.
They can be found in forests like Bwindi, Echuya among others.
